Dataform vs dbt

Google's built-in BigQuery transformation tool against the multi-warehouse standard.

Short answer

Dataform is Google Cloud's transformation service for BigQuery: SQLX files, JavaScript for reuse, and scheduling built into the Google Cloud console, with no separate tool to buy. dbt works across many warehouses, uses Jinja, and has a much larger ecosystem and job market. Choose Dataform if you are all-in on BigQuery and want the simplest setup; choose dbt for portability, packages, and skills that transfer.

Both tools do the same core job: you write SELECT statements, declare dependencies with ref(), and the tool builds tables and views in dependency order, with tests (dbt) or assertions (Dataform) along the way.

Dataform runs inside Google Cloud and targets BigQuery. Models are SQLX files: SQL with a config block at the top, and JavaScript where you need loops or reusable snippets. Repositories, development workspaces, and scheduled runs live in the console.

dbt is warehouse-agnostic. Models are SQL with Jinja, packages are shared through the dbt package hub, and you run it as open-source dbt Core with your own scheduler or on dbt's managed platform.

Choose Dataform when

  • BigQuery is your only warehouse and that is unlikely to change.
  • You want transformations, scheduling, and permissions managed inside Google Cloud.
  • Your team prefers JavaScript to Jinja for templating.
  • You want to avoid running or paying for another tool.

Choose dbt when

  • You use, or might move to, a warehouse other than BigQuery.
  • You want community packages, a semantic layer, and broad tool integrations.
  • Hiring and career portability matter: dbt skills appear in far more job posts.
  • You want unit tests and richer documentation tooling.
The verdict

On a BigQuery-only team that wants minimum setup, Dataform is a reasonable choice and costs nothing extra. For most teams, and for anyone building a career in analytics engineering, dbt is the better investment because the tool and the skills work across warehouses.

The underlying skills are identical: model by grain, separate staging from marts, and test the assumptions your dashboards depend on.

FAQ
Is Dataform free?
There is no separate charge for Dataform in Google Cloud. You pay for the BigQuery compute and storage your workflows use.
Can I move from Dataform to dbt?
Yes, but it is a rewrite of the templating rather than a copy: SQLX config blocks become dbt configs and YAML, JavaScript includes become Jinja macros, and assertions become dbt tests. The SQL inside each model mostly carries over.
Does Dataform work with Snowflake?
Dataform in Google Cloud runs workflows in BigQuery. If you need Snowflake or several warehouses, dbt is the usual choice.
